This is a big step and in the positive direction because of the aforementioned fact that “MediaTek powered devices don’t get regular updates or updates at all”. It has changed Xiaomi’s update roadmap because for the longest time it was believed that they wont update their year-old budget devices, especially with an Android version upgrade of all things. It is also worth mentioning that on the open-source front, there is not a lot of custom rom development for the devices in question, so it is a praiseworthy thing Xiaomi is doing.

A little is known at the moment about what changes these updates might bring to the table but you can expect performance improvements and optimizations that we have seen in the already updated Redmi Note 9 Pro and maybe more down the road.

Although we were not sure about the exact release date first but recently the news was confirmed on Weibo where the information was officially published claiming that the phone will release on next Tuesday i.e. 24th November. The phone was spotted on TENAA with the model number M2007J17C. A device with the same model number was then seen on Geekbench where it can be concluded that it has a Snapdragon 750G running the show. This might be the Note 9 Pro 5G, higher end variant of the Note 9 series. Geekbench also suggests that the device was running on Android 10 at the time this test was conducted however it can be expected that it may ship with Android 11 out of the box or will be updated shortly to it after launch.

Furthermore, it is expected that the device will be powered by a 5000mAh battery keeping in track with all the other Note 9 series phones. The screen is expected to be a Full HD+ LCD display and about 6.67 inches in size. Variants of the device may range between 4 GB, 6 GB, 8 GB of RAM and 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB of storage respectively.

Xiaomi’s Android-based interface, MIUI, is one of the most popular private user experience available on Android devices. The updates of MIUI 12, released recently, contain great innovations. Many parts of the interface have been customized and made compatible with the MIUI structure. MIUI versions would normally be equipped with new features with side versions such as 12.x, but with the increase in the number of devices, Xiaomi may have abandoned this method. Because now only flagships get side-version updates, for example the Mi 10 soon got 12.2 updates. Other devices are getting now the newer MIUI 12 update. This means that we will see these innovations of Xiaomi with MIUI 13.

It is now confirmed that MIUI 13 is in early stages of development and is expected to release in mid- 2021, keeping in track with all the previous MIUI releases. A few details about MIUI 13 are known currently but it can be expected that Xiaomi will focus on improving and revamping the whole user experience, maybe by tweaking its performance through smoother animations, improving the look, feel and such. It can also be expected that majority of devices that will receive this update will also have Android 11 by the time. We don’t know what features will be added just yet, but this new version will focus on the interface being comfortable and animated.

Even Mi 10 series is waiting for it and this is new for the company because in the past they have always rolled out major software updates from premium to budget chronology. According to me it is a step in the right direction because the majority of Xiaomi consumers buy their budget series phones.
The update itself does not bring a lot of improvements from MIUI 12 apart from the fact that it is based on Android 11. The download size is 2.3GB and can be flashed via recovery, however you should wait for the update to appear via OTA

However, is this a good or a bad thing, well depends on the perspective of consumers. For instance, a person using the Mi 10 series smartphone might feel that their device should have been updated first with the latest and greatest software because they paid a premium for that phone, on the other hand a person using a phone from Redmi Note 9 series might feel that Xiaomi is paying attention to its budget line-up too rather than only on their top dogs in the market. Whatever it is, it creates an image of dependency of the brand that they are not forgetting their budget range devices even if they are powered by Mediatek processors as it is a common view in the community that these devices don’t get updates frequently or at all. Coming at the matter in hand, Mi 10 is their flagship and will get an update soon too so it is nothing to frown upon.
