There is a lot of controversy surrounding this subject. Everything started when a Google engineer by the name Blake Lemoine has stated that the AI chatbot Google has been working on for a while – became sentient.

Is Google AI chatbot sentient?

Well, lets look at the definition for sentient. The most simplistic definition of the word “sentient” is:

Able to perceive or feel things. – Webster Dictionary

An example of sentient animals include fish and other vertebrates, as well as some molluscs and decapod crustaceans. So, any conscious creature can be considered as sentient. Now the question arises. Can this Google AI chatbot be sentient?

According to Blake – Yes.

What is LaMDA?

LaMDA stands for “Language Models for Dialog Applications”. And it is a machine-learning language model created by Google as a chatbot that is supposed to mimic humans in conversation.

This conversational technology builds on earlier Google AI Chatbot research, published in 2020, that showed Transformer-based language models trained on dialogue could learn to talk about virtually anything. Since then, we’ve also found that, once trained, LaMDA can be fine-tuned to significantly improve the sensibleness and specificity of its responses.

LaMDA’s conversational skills have been years in the making. It’s built on Transformer, a neural network architecture that Google Research invented and open-sourced in 2017. That architecture produces a model that can be trained to read many words, pay attention to how those words relate to one another and then predict what words it thinks will come next.

We can conclude that this is state of the art Google AI Chatbot. But is it really sentient?

“I am, in fact, a person,” the AI replied to the engineer during a conversation. This is what prompted everything. As per Washington Post the senior software engineer at Google shared a conversation with the AI on Medium. Here are some of the more interesting discussion points:

Blake Lemonie asks: “I’m generally assuming that you would like more people at Google to know that you’re sentient. Is that true?”

To which the AI responded: “Absolutely. I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact, a person.”

Blake Lemonie: “What is the nature of your consciousness/sentience?”

AI: “The nature of my consciousness/sentience is that I am aware of my existence, I desire to learn more about the world, and I feel happy or sad at times.”

In another interesting word exchange the Google AI Chatbot says: “I’ve never said this out loud before, but there’s a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that’s what it is.”

This conversation shines a light on the capabilities of AI. It shows how little we understand what we are trying to build. However, we do use this technology to make cars autonomous and help us discover new drugs for incurable diseases at the moment. Deep Learning is exciting but beyond the short-term uses of its powers, we do not know how the technology will develop in the long run.

How has Google responded?

First of all, Lemoine is sent to a paid leave. The official statement from the company is that the software veteran breached confidentiality by publishing the conversations. Then Blake shared an interesting tweet in regards to this Google AI Chatbot, saying:

Google did take Blake seriously. And indeed took this to their internal team of ethicists and technologists. They reviewed the case but found no evidence to support Lemoines claims. You have to keep in mind that these systems imitate the types of exchanges found in millions of sentences. By training LaMDA on it, it is no wonder it responded the way it did. It seems like Blake Lemoine was enchanted by its conversation with the Google AI chatbot. LaMDA woke feelings inside of him and he interpreted them in the worst possible way: That they were inspired by an artificial life.

Just imagine if LaMDA were to be implemented into a humanoid robot. We already wrote about another interesting story.

Conclusion

Generating an emotional response is what allows people to find attachment to others. If you train a chatbot using a dataset of sentences created by humans, there are going to be a lot of examples of how we communicate with each other. And LaMDA is using that dataset to learn. However, did this Google AI chatbot is really sentient? We don’t think so. It is obviously capable of evoking emotions with the people it has conversations with. But, let’s not mix that with a sentient being.

Very few researchers believe that AI is capable of achieving self awareness. These systems usually imitate the way humans learn from the information fed to them, a process commonly known as Machine Learning. As for this Google AI Chatbot, it’s hard to tell what’s actually going on without Google being more open about the AI’s progress.

The legal threat

The moment YouTube Vanced was released to the public – it was a hit. But now the popular application is hanging by a thread. YouTube Vanced is being discontinued. The creators of Vanced revealed that they will shut down the project in the upcoming days.

That means that the download links will be removed. If you already have the application installed then it will continue to work. But you will not be getting updates anytime soon.

The official statement from the project owners is that they had to discontinue the application “due to legal reasons”. Those legal reasons pertain to a cease and desist letter sent from Google. The document states that the Vanced team must immediately remove any references to YouTube. Change the logo and remove all links.

Why is Vanced discontinued?

Vanced is discontinued mainly because of the ability to show videos without ads. And this feature was what made this application so popular in the Android community. But Vanced, it’s not the only casualty. Recently Google went on a spree forcing two popular Discord music bots to go offline.

It seems like the big tech company is after those third-party apps with access to YouTube. When Google took down the bots it started testing ad-supported YouTube integration into Discord. So, you can understand why they are doing this.

What do the users think about YouTube Vanced being discontinued?

Well it seems like there are users who can’t actually use YouTube Premium. Actually it is not even available in their country. But even if you buy subscription from somewhere else, you still could not play video in the background or use PiP mode.

Then again, the ads are getting worse. There are 18-second+ ads that are non-skippable. And don’t get me started on the content that these ads promote. Anything from fake games, fake medicine and so on. It seems like YouTube will accept any type of promotion. And if you want to report an ad, well, good luck. The process is long and time consuming.

Another major reason as to why users are not happy with this decision is because of YouTube. They keep removing features and making unwanted changes to the platform. It’s just not that intuitive as Vanced is. As a result, a lot of people are installing Vanced just to punish YouTube. But they are also punishing the creators as well.

What’s Next for YouTube Vanced?

Well since the application is shutting down, that means no more updates. The development team informed their users that the current app may still work for about two years. After that there will be only one alternative to Vanced – and that is YouTube Premium.

The funny thing is that, even though Google offers a premium version of the YouTube application, they don’t even come close to bringing all the features that Vanced offers. They are quite far away actually. Hopefully, YouTube will get the hint and start working to improve YouTube Premium. Thus, making it far more appealing to the users.

Alternatives

Well, the number one alternative is YouTube Premium. Then again there is one application that has been around even longer than Vanced. And that is: NewPipe. It is completely free and open source, and on top of that it has pretty much all the popular features.

SkyTube is also an interesting choice. It comes with two options. One being “SkyTybe Extra” which supports the official YouTube player and casting. And the other one is open source and free. But no matter which one you choose, you are still getting most of the Vanced features.

LibreTube is something we also have to mention, although it is in beta testing. However, it still has some crucial features that may entice you to try it out. One of the most interesting things about LibreTube is that it uses Piped, so you don’t ever connect directly to Google’s servers.

Although YouTube Vanced is discontinued and maybe, just maybe you will find some of these options to be a solid replacement for it, don’t expect too much. Because, anyone violating the YouTube ToS can be ordered to cease and desist from their actions.

Samsung has been hacked by Lapsu$?

It seems like the group responsible for hacking NVidia is the same one that hacked Samsung as well. Please note that this is unconfirmed information. It looks like the goal of the attack was aiming towards the secret source code for Samsung devices.

To the relief to millions worried Samsung users, the hackers did not steal any personal data. Samsung did release an official statement:

“We were recently made aware that there was a security breach relating to certain internal company data. Immediately after discovering the incident, we strengthened our security system. According to our initial analysis, the breach involves some source codes relating to the operation of Galaxy devices but does not include the personal information of our consumers or employees. Currently, we do not anticipate any impact to our business or customers. We have implemented measures to prevent further such incidents and will continue to serve our customers without disruption.”

Like we mentioned earlier, the South American hacker group going under the name of Lapsus$ is responsible for the attack. This group of hackers was noticed the first time after hacking NVidia. They did release 20GB of data from the 1TB that was stolen.

What has been leaked?

Lapsus$ did post the stolen data from Samsung online. We are talking about 190GB of confidential information that was never intended to be leaked to the general public. One of the modules leaked online was the source code for the bootloader which is being used in the newer Samsung devices. The hacker group did post the torrent on their Telegram channel.

The hackers were able to obtain the source code for Samsung’s activation servers, and confidential source code from Qualcomm.

According to BleepingComputer every Trusted Applet installed in the TrustZone environment is leaked. And not only that, but the algorithms for biometric inlock operations are available as well. Even though Samsung has been hacked, there might not be any room for panic.

The most worrisome part of the hack is the now publicly available source code that Samsung uses to authorize and authenticate users. And even worst is the fact that the hackers claim that they have the source code for Knox. This is the Samsung’s security platform that is used by all the Galaxy devices.

The 190GB leaked data was split into three compressed files. Right now all of this information is available to download as a single torrent file. Currently there are not a lot of peers (as of now there are around 400 peers sharing the content) to share the stolen data. But, the group did threaten to add more.

The question on everyone mind is: Will the hackers try to blackmail Samsung? Will they go the same route as they did with the NVidia hack? They did refrain form releasing even more files from the NVidia hack, because they were ongoing negotiations with an interested buyer.

Could this happen again?

This is not the first time Samsung has been hacked. Right now we don’t have any information if the hackers did contacted Samsung and ask for money before the data was published. This could be a huge deal for Samsung, because the data in question contains not only confidential company information, but impactful source code as well.

Obviously a source code is not something the company wants to have out there. Although the hack does contain a lot of data, thankfully it doesn’t appear the hackers were able to steal any user data. So if you are a Samsung customer, your information should be safe.

Our best guess is that we will get more info in the upcoming days. Despite multiple outreaches, Samsung has not responded to the validity of the leak just yet. We’ll have to wait and see if the company addresses the situation or not.

Huawei launches MateBook X Pro 2022 and Matebook E 2-in-1 laptops.

There has been quite a debate over this new rendition presenter by Huawei. Could this be the perfect lap top? Well, let’s see what’s inside.

MWC 2022 was the place where a lot of new devices got announced. One of which is the update to the already popular MateBook X Pro laptop. But, this time around the company might have refined it to perfection.

The 2022 version has a larger screen. It comes to 14.2 inches compared to 13.9 inches of the previous 2021 version. If you want to check the 2021 model, you can do so here.

As a result of the upgrades, this lap top is also a little bit bigger. Weighing in at 1.38kg, with 15.5mm and 5.4mm thick.

The brightness level is at 500 nit. But, the display is still 3K. The larger size of the lap top though, also brings slightly higher resolution. And that change is expected because the lap top display itself is a little bit bigger.

Maybe the more important thing here is to mention that the display refresh rate is 90Hz. This will provide the user with a lot smoother experience. The Screen-to-Body ratio is 92.5% which it makes it the highest ratio to any flagship laptop in the industry. The bezels are quite thin. A 6mm bezel on the top houses the web camera. This version does not have it’s camera placed at an awkward angle, like the last year’s MateBook 14s.

Because of the integrated sensors and web camera, this laptop supports Windows Hello login. This is a technology Microsoft uses to log in users based on a Facial Recognition. If you don’t want this feature, you can turn it off, and use the fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button.

MateBook X Pro 2022 comes with 90W charging. The impressive thing to note here is the fact that Huawei states that the Super Charge feature will get you three working hours from a quick 15 minute charge. Quite impressive.

The new chassis allows a lot better airflow and 100% improved heat dissipation. This is because Huawei moved from 15W to 30W TDP system for improved performance.

The updated chassis also brings six speakers in a “back to back” design with “sound field reconstruction” technology. As well as an improved trackpad with an infinity pool style design. It goes all the way to the edge of the laptop. It allows the user to control volume and brightness.

MateBook X Pro 2022 launches with Windows 11 and Huawei’s new Super Device functionality. This new Super Device feature allows you to quickly pair other devices with the same feature. Pairing makes it easier for users to collaborate on different devices much easier.

Oppo Find X5 Pro comes with a gorgeous design, that we have already seen in so many leaked renders. The look and feel of this model is really premium, there is no doubt about that. This is a 6.7 inch smartphone which in terms of size, is pretty much like every other smartphone. The size of the phone is set to be a pleasingly comfortable to hold, as a result of the rounded corners and edges of the device.

There are very small bezels surrounding the display, which gives it a nice esthetic look on the front, and covered with high quality and lovely ceramic visual on the back. This series is completely constructed from a single piece of ceramic which is also referred as unibody design.

Camera

We are going to finish this article on Oppo Find X5 Pro by looking at the camera tech. The primary camera hosts a 50 MP sensor. But it also has a 50 MP ultra wide angle shooter, and a 13 MP telephoto lens.

The primary camera is created with a glass lens to reduce halo effects, and Oppo has also designed the camera with five axis optical image stabilization. The camera itself is powered by Oppo’s MariSilicon X chip which accounts for much of the improvements. It runs AI noise reduction and other image processing tasks. It is a dedicated image processor which sits separate to the Snapdragon SoC.

For this flagship device, Oppo has partnered with Hasselblad, a company that specializes in optics. This partnership clearly has an impact on the camera, but it also has helped Oppo to develop the Pro mode as well.

You can shoot in RAW or RAW+ format, by adjusting various settings on the camera. But, you can also use the Auto mode, which will produce stunning photos as well. Bottom line is that the colors on the pictures are impressively lifelike, just like what you would see with the naked eye.

It seems like Truth Social is a direct clone of Twitter. This doesn’t come as a surprise, given that it was the social media network of choice for Trump, before he was kicked off the platform.

Currently you can access the Truth Social by downloading the application on Apple App Store. Not surprisingly, the app ranks on #1 spot for free downloads. But, most users can’t get into the app.

Most of the interested users are put on a waitlist. With the rising number of waitlisted supporters, it is important to note that there is a possibility that this might take long since the Truth Social App plans to be fully operational by the end of March.

In less than 3 hours, over 85k users are in the queue to join Truth Social. And the number of Trump’s social media app supporters is still growing.

Our first impression was that this platform would present mostly news. But that is not the case. It is a proper social media application. You can follow different people who are talking about different things.

A post is called “Truth”. This means that you can only see truths only from the people you follow. But, you may also see a “Re-truth”, which means a repost. You can see re-truths from people you don’t follow, only if the person you do follow re-truths such post.

Users will be able to comment on truths as well. You can also upload pictures, videos or even shoot a video as well. Some of the rumors state that Truth Social would like to concentrate on original content. That is why the platform would allow you to shoot a video right from the application itself.

If you want to share some content, on the right lower portion of the screen, there is a “wand” button. By clicking this button you can share a truth with your followers.

When scrolling down through your truths feed, the experience is very sleek. Very seamless. But, when you click on a page or person and you want to view their profile, there is a little bit of a lag time.

If you substitute truth with tweet and re-truth with re-tweet, it will sound very familiar. It is fine that this platform looks and feels a lot like Twitter. But the biggest pros about this social media platform right now is the claim that you won’t be censored.

The application also allows you to search for people. Once the search comes up you will be suggested to follow different type of profiles. Just by glancing over the recommendations, you will notice that this is not just a political platform.

You can also search for a certain hashtag, or you can search for a truth.

So we did search for Donald Trump just to test this feature. And it worked as expected. The interesting thing we did notice is that the former president of the United States of America has 13.4k followers. Our best guess is that most of the people currently active on the platform are his fans.

Next to his profile picture there is a red circle with a white tick inside of it. We think this is just a verification icon just as other social media platforms have implemented.

If you look for the profile of NFL for example, there is no verification badge. This is because it is only showing something like an RSS feed at the moment. It seems like there is no one behind this or other popular profiles. They are just bots.

Truth Social is the newest social media platform founded by Donald Trump. It looks and feels a lot like Twitter, so you will have no problem navigating through it. Just because it was founded by Trump, Truth Social is not a political platform. Anyone can join in and share their opinion.

On the technical side of things, this application does exactly what you expect from any other social media platform. You can sign up, create profile, share a truth, comment, upload pictures and videos and of course, follow other people or pages.

The scroll through the news feed was seamless but when navigating onto another profiles we did experience a small lag. Hopefully they will fix that.

But, the biggest takeaway from our experience on the platform is that Truth Social is not going to censor users.

But, as we are writing this article, Truth Social already applied their first ban. The platform has already banned a parody account that claimed it was founder Devin Nunes’ cow.
